Ngake Hub Christmas Party

Last Thursday, the famous Ngake Hub Christmas Party was held in our school hall! There was lots of delicious food set out on the tables and the hall was decorated with Xmas trees. We had a special visit from Santa, who walked around the tables and gave us lollies and chocolate. It was so much fun!

Ngake Hub visits Wellington Zoo

This term our Inquiry topic is 'Creatures of Aotearoa'. To help us learn a little more about NZ animals the Ngake Hub took a trip to Wellington Zoo in Week 3 to take part in a learning session called "Unique New Zealand". Soon after we arrived, we walked up the path past the sheep to the barn. One of the zoo educators told us the story of Ngake and Whataitai and we split into groups to learn more about Weta, Kiwi and Kunekune pigs. We also got to hear the Maori legend of how the Kiwi lost its wings.
After morning tea at Kamala's, we got to explore the zoo with our adult helpers. We saw the giraffes, chimpanzees, cheetahs, red pandas, sun bears, meerkats, ring tailed lemurs and so much more. We had a great day and learnt so much!
We were so lucky with the weather too, because soon after we got back from school it started pouring with rain!

Gymnastics and Ball Skills at the ASB Centre

In Term 2, we got to go down to the ASB Centre to practise our gymnastics and ball skills once a week.

In gymnastics, the instructors gave us a fun warm up activity, like finding 5 things that were blue and touching them with a body part. Next, we did gym stretches such as pike, front support, rear support, straddle and butterfly. Once our bodies were warm, we completed a circuit on the gym equipment, where we practised jumping, landing, balancing, rolling and climbing.

In Ball Skills we practised our throwing and catching skills with different equipment such as tennis balls and dodge balls.

Here are some photos of us at the ASB centre.

Science Rotations in Ngake Hub

This term our main focus is the Nature of Science component of the NZ Curriculum. In the classroom we have been focusing on the idea of changes relating to solids, liquids and gases. We have also been learning to make detailed observations using our senses, and are working towards asking detailed questions to further our inquiring minds.

We have just finished doing a rotation day where the children mixed up across the hub into different groups and got to have a go at 4 different experiments. We made lava lamps, volcanic eruptions, scared pepper and made marbled milk, Here are some photos below of our experiments.
