Mihi Whakatau

Over the last 2 weeks, Kilbirnie School has held a Mihi Whakatau each week. We do this to welcome any new children to our school. The manuhiri (students and staff) sing songs, and deliver some whaikorero to welcome the tangata whenua. The tangata whenua elect a parent to deliver their whaikorero and also perform a waiata. After the mihi whakatau is finished, the tangata whenua become part of the manuhiri and will sit with the manuhiri during the next mihi whakatau to welcome the new students.

Here are a few photos from our most recent mihi whakatau.
