As an introduction to our unit study on Plants and Growing the Ngake Hub visited the Discovery Tree House at the Botanical Gardens on Wednesday 18th September.
On arrival at the gardens, we were met by Marion, Rosalyn and Natasha , who were our guides during the trip. We were divided into 3 groups and each group spent 30 minutes at each rotation.
In one of the rotations we learnt how to make our very own plant pot using newspaper. We filled our pots with soil and planted a pea seed in each one.
In the second rotation we headed up
towards the Discovery Garden, where we saw many different vegetables and herbs being
grown. These included cauliflower, kale,
spinach, rosemary, mint and we were allowed to taste or smell some of these herbs and vegetables fresh from the garden. We also put some scraps of food into
the worm farm and some of us were allowed to pick the worms up and let them run over
our hands.
Our final rotation was in the Education Centre where we were introduced to the 6 parts of a plant, which are roots, stem, leaves, flower, seeds, and fruit.
We were shown a variety of fruits and vegetables and we had to put them into the different groups.
We learnt that anything with seeds in it is the fruit part of the plant.
We were very lucky that we got to taste some of these.
